The small village of Madrid, New Mexico was a coal mining town from late in the 19th through the middle of the 20th centuries. On Christmas Day 1945 the original 1899 Tavern burned down - it was temporarily located on what is now the Old Coal Mine Museum until its current location was completed in 1947 which included the 40 ft. lodge pole pine bar and many of the furnishings.The mines closed in 1954 and Madrid became known as a ghost town for about 20 years. When you "belly up to the bar" at the Mine Shaft Tavern, you will be served from the oldest continuously run Tavern in Santa Fe County as well as the longest stand-up bar in the state of New Mexico!
